harime_nuiThe finale of Kill la Kill is coming soon! I seem to only be able to make myself care about one new anime per season, if that. I think I subconsciously still think I’m on dial up and think downloading video is an overnight process instead of something I can do while preparing a bag of minute rice. It’s sure been a ride. For some reason I’ve been fixated on Harime Nui, or as I wind up calling her for the benefit of friends not following the show, Creepy Eyepatch Girl. And I say “for some reason” because I really don’t like her character design much and the full extent of her characterization seems to be merrily trolling everyone she can. I guess that was enough for me to like Blazblue’s Hazama and to a subtler extent, Xellos from Slayers.

Maybe it’s just because she does succeed at being creepy. Sort of in an Ao Oni way, where she just looks ‘off.’ I was looking off some official art of her while doodling last night and she is just anatomically confounding to me, like someone made a Bratz doll of the Archer class in Disgaea. They even tend to animate her differently than most of the others, with lots of lazy dragged-across-the-screen or paper-doll moments that make her look creepily smooth next to everyone else moving in a more “spastic” way. It’s hard to say that it’s all stylistic and not at all corner cutting, but it does kind of make her stand out in the show. That and her apparent ability to interact with on screen titles, reach across split-screens to toy with someone’s hair, and so on does a good job of making her feel “wrong” and out of place in the world.

It’s probably mostly the trolling, though.
