2013-11-16-dixieSometimes I wonder whether my scanner is garbage or my penciling is too light and scratchy. Not like I post too many actual penciled drawings since I tend to be pretty sparse with the details and they aren’t much to look at.

Some stuff happened in the past couple weeks that’s gotten me looking at myself and how I deal with problems, what ticks me off, and what I really want to be doing with my life. I’m not going to emo on for pages about it, but the short version is that I’ve got a habit of walling up and just not doing anything once I finish the work day, which is why updates have been pretty sporadic lately. I’m taking some coding classes that are working the side of my brain that’s not used to the exercise (shut up in advance) on top of a change of position at work, and low but heavy on my priority list is getting some reliable transportation again since I live in a town with less-than-ideal mass transit.

So, I’m going to post more often. Sketches, rambles, hopefully congealing into actual pieces that will generate some amusement. I’ve been in and out of some really bad funks recently, and I think that as long as I have a creative outlet that I can use, I can take the edge off of my nerves, and just generally be more comfortable opening up.

Thanks for all your time, everyone. I’ll try to waste it the right way from now on.

…hhhhhheeeeeeeyyyyy guyssssssss…

It’s been a bit longer than planned since I last checked in here, been mad busy. Well, mostly just mad. Javascript and me have an understanding of sorts, based around a line painted down the center of my apartment, but I have to grudgingly let him onto my side to get to the fridge and I have to venture into his to use the bathroom. I’ve threatened- I mean, said, elsewhere (FACE THIRD HALF ON LIKEBOOK AND TWITTAR) that I wanted to ‘step up my game,’ and I’m finally getting settled enough to make good on it. Case in point, I just now finishing inking a [+/-] I had sitting around for weeks. Sadly, that means no Halloween special as planned unless I just say screw it because I wanted to talk about Creepypasta eventually anyway. Whoops, spoiler.

In which I muse about games that left a major impression on who I am and what I expect in the world of gaming.

Growing up, I was a Nintendo kid, but as frequently as I played games at my friends’ houses who had other games and systems, I wasn’t a stranger to the Genesis either. It had a unique sort of charm to it- the graphics seemed nicer, but the sound had the strange ability to be both shitty and catchy at the same time. Though I played the daylights out of Sonic 1-3 and Moonwalker, it always seemed to be the games that I only saw in passing or on TV that really captivated my attention.Continue reading MYGames: Gunstar Heroes

OK! Been a bit since the last significant update, but I haven’t been totally idle. Next week, I hope to turn out a new comic of some kind or another and/or write some site articles. I’ve been in the mood to try more occasional updates while sticking to a theme, like the My Games or Demo Demo Panic ones as a guide. (Actually, I was going to write one about Armored Core: Last Raven then realized I’ve basically said everything I was going to in between the text review and review for AC3. On the topic of redundancy, have you ever heard of The Guardian Legend? IT’S KIND OF GOOD.)

I’ve been trying to push details better in my sketching lately. It does help you keep up sort of an idea of how the placement of things (facial features, etc) work if you make yourself do drawings from photos or life now and then, even if you have a cartoony style you’re comfortable with. I’m fond of clean, bold lines, which is part of why I draw so manga-y, but while I’ve been a bit happier with my stuff lately (I think my coloring’s improved a lot since just last year)

I guess what I’m getting at is I read a lot of webcomic criticism sites, and it seems almost universal that nobody likes an artist content to stagnate in their style. I don’t wanna be “that guy who draws his characters eyes a little farther apart every year,” or stubbornly insisting that my malformed fingers are stylistic. (Actually, they’re a by-product of the brush tool in Illustrator not all the close, tight curves- which you can totally call me being lazy since it’s probably fine tunable.)

Stay tuned, amigos.
