It’s been pretty rewarding to push myself to go all the way to colors on this stuff lately even if it’s all pretty simple character designs. It seems like it’s been a good idea to grab something I had sitting around and ink/finish it when I’m feeling kind of blah.

Took a break from the Slayers stuff to practice a couple tweaks to Gatty’s design and draw some non SD figures in general. Though I do really use a similar process for both, I just really elongate everything. I find myself relenting on my initial idea to go full tilt cutesy fashion-doll style on the Angel Dust designs. Still making an attempt to avoid too much sameface, I think her eyes and rounded off chin pull it off pretty well in a low-detail style like I favor.

A new wave of Nintendo figures hit the store I work at and I had to grab a Fox, and I was stoked the bonus accessory was a teeny Arwing fighter! So I thought I would finally try and put the Variable Arwing idea I’d been kicking around together in a sketch. I really barely tried to get a good color setup going or anything, I was mostly just trying to get a feel for the form of it. It has a bit of a Zone of Enders feel on purpose because I was thinking along the same lines as when they made the transforming Vic Viper for the Second Runner. It doesn’t really look as good here as it did in my head, though.

It does at least meet up with my preferred ‘engineering’ standard that the thrusters and cockpit don’t change position dramatically, which is something I always figured would be important to something that both changes form and moves around at high speeds. Not to rag on Macross, since Kawamori is basically my patron saint, but looking at the zig-zag origami stuff newer gen Valkyries pull to tuck the cockpit into the body just seems patently unsafe.

Note the Ver. Falco doodled off to the side with angry eyes on the “ears” and a beak crest across the visor head. I wouldn’t mind revisiting the concept down the line and polishing it up.
