That which pertains to my old long-form webcomic, Revolver Knight. Finished in 2005 and archived somewhere.

RELOAD!

Hey, I finally got around to updating and fixing all the backend stuff on the site (that I can remember being broken, anyway.) Chiefly, Revolver Knight is now readable again, should anyone want to go back and check out my old series. I could have done better with it overall, probably went in with a bigger scale story and world than I could actually use within the space of a real story for one. So, if you’re curious, nostalgic or feel like comparing my old work to now, enjoy.

I do toy around with the idea of redoing the series some day just because I still like the characters. (In fact I’m not *totally* against the idea of using my card based RPG as an RK reboot of sorts since both have their roots in homaging JRPG and old anime tropes; at the very least, cameo characters are all but guaranteed.)

As far as the actual nuts-and-bolts issue that had the site offline before, apparently having multiple MySQL databases run by the same user account creates *issues* and in fact can be an indicator to my hosting company as evidence of foul play (somehow) so I’ve gone through and created a bunch of redundant new accounts in order to keep the site from spontaneously breaking on me again.

Here’s a little treat for long time followers, back when I was just beginning to see how nice vector-drawn inking could look, I decided briefly to see how a do-over of my first long comic, Revolver Knight would look. Unfortunately, I was pretty burnt out from doing the series the first time around and kind of stopped at there, well that and a couple one-off side story things.

I still have a little interest in revisiting the cast, and they got a cameo in last year’s “Christmas special.”

Putting aside the general train wreck of mashed up anime and game tropes the story is made up of, on a technical level it bugs me that I have such uneven page margins and the text flow is off in a few spots. I did better attempting to detail the backgrounds while simultaneously screwing up the perspective- partly because I was just beginning to use the program for line art. Eventually I learned it was easier to cheat completely and abuse the skew and perspective tools! Also, FireAlpaca has a lot of helpful ruler tools, but I haven’t really put them to work yet.

Things I do like- main character is incredibly lazy, the frilled lizard sitting on his back, and a cameo by I-No in the crowd watching the unseen parade.

I’d be lying if I said it was a productive day today. I have mostly hashed out the basic rules and mocked up a starter party for my card game, but nothing I care to show off just yet (I’d like to show it off when things get more polished for sure.) Past that, I spent all day waiting on a package that never came and navel gazing, so it’s fitting to post and self-crit a little, don’t you think?

End of the Road

For those who haven’t been following, Revolver Knight is finished as of today (barring future related projects,) marking the end of something some of you long time readers might remember as the cast of some fan fiction MSTings, the subjects of the random art in my gallery that weren’t from super obscure anime and esoteric games before it turned into an all out… ‘thing’ of its own.

For those of you who haven’t been following, now’s a good time to catch up.

For those of you who don’t give a crap, I’ll be posting part 2 of StarFox: The ‘Other’ Nintendo Series over the weekend. Also, you’re jerks.

Or… do I?

Last day of vacation here, it’s been a pretty good ‘catch-up’ break for me so hopefully that means the end of the site’s dry spell. I’ve finished chapter 24 of Revolver and updated the first timers’ summary page if anybody’d like to give the comic a shot but don’t have time to read the whole archive right away. There’s also been a few tweaks to the character page, mainly removing incidents of the word ‘mysterious’ for characters whose motivations and natures were revealed months and months ago. Chapter 25 starts Friday. And with a totally different set of characters.

The scene change goes nicely with me being sick of drawing Kenji in his little Sol Badguy headgear thing. (Technically it’s a ‘modern’ Surrenian Army visor, but who paid that much attention to Z’s flashback chapter anyway?)

(Once I ‘fix’ the RK hub page, the comic related blurbs will probably stay there for the most part since I know there’s a subset out there who think the comic promotions are kind of annoying and just want to see more gaming stuff.)

On that note, and since I’ve saving my vinegar for full length pieces, I’ve been enjoying the daylights out of Macross Ultimate Frontier for the PSP, something of a delayed Christmas gift from Jake (longtime readers might be getting the impression I’ve pretty much only got one friend in real life, and that’s a blatant mistake- I have three!) The ‘giant robot’ genre of action gaming is bizarrely empty of quality titles, especially if the stuck-in-the-cockpit perspective of Mechwarrior isn’t your cup of tea. MUF does a pretty admirable job of recreating Macross dogfighting, with missiles twisting everywhere in wild patterns and familiar series background tunes. While the designs in the sequel and prequel series are awesome, the most fun I had was blasting through the classic Macross series since I was a Robotech addict when I was younger. About the only gripe I have for the game is that it looks amazing in action, but when you see the stills on loading screens or when a model moves just the right way, they look really cheesy. Since when you take the poly count down on a Zentraedi battleship, it’s basically a giant death pickle.

Maybe that’s what my next stupid doodle will be. Death pickle. Yeeeeeah.
