The Little Builders’ Experience

After finishing the enjoyable but overshadowed Little Battlers Experience (LBX) for 3DS, I had a hunch based on the detailed model kit boxes and the fact the game was about robots and from Bandai, that I could probably find some model kits based on it on Amazon. And right I was, for a surprisingly non gougey sum, I now own a physical copy of the LBX I used through most of the game. I’m sure there are probably better possible builds available, but I’m a sucker for robots that turn into jets, so here’s Odin!

Rough Draft Edition- Get it Here

Welp, here goes. For anyone interested in giving the first draft of my dungeon crawler a shot, this ZIP contains a PDF of the basic rules along with PNG files of the card templates I’ve been doing testing with (give or take a few tweaks.)

Go in knowing the following:

  • There aren’t really any art assets inserted yet, so it’ll be a while before they look nice
  • Some item types and specific items haven’t been made yet (tried to work around that but may have missed a few mentions of Spears or miscellanous things)
  • The Support Attack/Support Defense mechanic may be simplified to a basic Support stat in future drafts. I think this may also allow for some fun ‘non combat’ characters designed to affect team morale.
  • Character lineup is very basic right now; there will be more to come. Feel free to print an extra sheet if you find yourself needing more. (I started with 8 to get 2 full parties going then added the Defender to fill out the page.)
  • You’ll need some outside counters of some kind for now; I got by using pennies for wound markers and quarters for character placement. You may want to have a marker to show who your current Leader is if you don’t want to physically rearrange your party formation.
  • Boss monsters haven’t been included until I’m sure regular monsters work- bosses will be within special Room Cards so you can flee if outmatched.

Thanks to anybody who cares to try this out, feedback of all kinds will be appreciated. My aim is to make something quick to pick up on but with enough things to do within it that it has a little bit of depth/strategy. This prototype has 9 characters, 9 monsters, 18 items and 27 room cards, which should hopefully be enough to get the idea across.

it’s a new frontier

2016 is upon is already, it seems like 2015 just flew by for me. It’s probably at least partially due to going out of my way to keep busy practicing my artwork in hopes of improving, and while it might not have been especially dramatic, I think my “off” days by the end look better than my “off” days before it became routine, so I’ll take that as a little bit of encouragement. Though, I didn’t put as much effort behind fixing my weaknesses so much as coming up with ways of drawing figures that I felt more comfortable with that didn’t give me too horrible a result. (Ironically, it was that stretch of drawing “chibi” characters that helped joining arms and legs to the body click for me more than anything else, from there I pretty much used the same basic technique ‘stretched out’ to come up with a look I rather like.)

I don’t really have too many solid goals or a declared “resolution” for the year. I’ll still draw frequently, but I won’t be busting my ass to have something up whether or not it’s good/complete to meet a daily deadline. I would like to get Angel Dust going, but I think my first order of business is getting my card game prototype finally ready for testing. I have a few interested parties already, and I’m trying to gather a broad variety of skill levels or gamer types to give it a shot because I want the game to be as easy and fast paced to play as possible.

I’m starting to dig Irrgarten as a working title, though it will likely need something extra to be finalized. I haven’t been sweating it too much, though the old working title of RAID! was feeling kind of blah and I’m looking more now for something more in the vein of a nonsense JRPG fantasy world title. So make sure you stay tuned for updates on that, I’ll be changing the card game tag to “Irrgarten” for now, at least until something else sounds better.

Also even though I’m not guaranteeing daily draws, here’s a couple anyway!
