Switchin’ It Up (And Other Stuff)

‘Ey folks. Been a while again, and I really meant to get back into the swing of regularly posting here again, but I’ve been in kind of a slump recently. Thankfully, some very awesome people, old and new have been doing their best to help me pick up and get back at it.

Through a combination of birthday money, commissions and Twitch paying out at a good time of month, I finally pulled the trigger on getting a Switch since I kind of like to have my handhelds current and it’s kind of a dream machine for in how it doubles as a console and portable system. Been enjoying Xenoblade 2 greatly, if a bit cautiously since random draws are very much A Thing both for Blade recruitment and getting items for quests. But it oozes charm, much like the first. (And in going to try and link to the relevant Eishi N’ Dixie strip, I found that my archives are apparently busted, so I guess maybe it’s time I finally wiped the site and started over from scratch with more of a focus to it then the current, Frankensteined-together WordPress page I’m on.) E3 has me pretty hyped for DAEMON X MACHINA for a mecha fix and part of me is geeking over that Switch-exclusive Star Fox merch, but I’ll have to decide if it’s $75 worth of cool. (Really, if new games are gonna be $40 to $60 new and it comes with a plastic Arwing and other junk it’s not that awful, but seeing it in one big sum makes me hesitate a tad. The SNK 40th Anniversary Collection and their apparent new attempt at a Gals Fighter are on the way too, in addition to various WiiU ports other people gripe about but I missed out on.

I’ve been having a pretty good time streaming lately, though my art output’s basically dropped to nothing aside from aforementioned commissions. Some super generous viewers lobbed a bunch of Steam games to try out including the new Battletech, which despite some of the mixed impressions I’ve read I’m really digging since it’s something I’ve wanted since my teen years- a digital version of the board game so I can have the depth of the tabletop game without all the stat tracking and other paperwork. A few weeks ago to celebrate crossing 400 followers, I decided to sit down and do a mini marathon sampling a bit of stuff that’d been sitting in my backlog for some time. Course, Steam being Steam there’s still more stuff yet to be touched. T_T I may look into getting some capture gear since I’ve been trying to share some obscuro PS2 games and the emulated versions chug too much to be really satisfactory for stream.

Howdy all, been a spell, hasn’t it?

I’m gonna try and do more frequent art streams soon, if anyone’s interested in dropping by my Twitch sometime. I’m feeling a bit better now from “stuff” before, and while I’m not probably going to be “over” it for a while, I know I have people to go to and things to take my mind off of it.

I actually started writing a new draft of my card game the other day, though I think I may have lost a chunk of my art assets and stuff. I guess it won’t hurt too much to do them over! I was pretty thoroughly demoralized after the 2nd edition tests flopped and I realized the original edition was much easier to play (fast and easy is my goal, which is kind of challenging when the project in question is ‘make a dungeon crawler that requires as little as possible other than the card deck’) Once I get something substantial together I’ll likely relaunch the project-irrgarten blog.

Comics? Not in a massive hurry, want to sharpen myself up a bit more first. I haven’t done anything more elaborate than Twitch emotes in a while. I did do some comic pages for… someone a while back but MyPaint (while great for painting) kind of stinks for page layouts and things that need to be a specific size when they’re done. I honestly may go back to scanning in penciled pages because that seemed to work best for me as far as comics.

Maybe it’s time I gave Eishi n’ Dixie something to do again…

What’s That Scamp Up To These Days?

What’s That Scamp Up To These Days? published on No Comments on What’s That Scamp Up To These Days?

It’s been a while since I really sat down and wrote out a substantial post anywhere. Seeing as how that I’m up way past my normal bed time thanks to a ‘nap’ that lasted longer than my usual sleep these days, it seems like as good a time as any. So, first off, nope, not dead. Mostly been busy with Twitch related junk the past… wow, probably like a year, as one might guess from adding an entire gallery devoted to emotes I made for friends and commission since that’s what I’ve been doing the most of, art-wise for a spell. I started 2018 with the intent to do another sketch-a-day exercise but I’ve been pretty bad at keeping up and pretty much accepted a more modest “just don’t go for entire weeks without plugging in your tablet” as a goal. My schedule takes a toll on me sometimes, though I’m mostly happy to be done with The Day Job by 1pm at the latest most days. If I still had the energy to get more done in that post work free time I’d be really happy, har.

I’ve been battling against burnout off and on lately and cut down on some of my Twitch time to get out once in a while or nap or something. I love the community on there, but sometimes I feel kind of a pressure to ‘be there’ for people, especially friends with smaller audiences or just starting out and I can’t be everywhere at once, ya know? Hopefully there’s no hard feelings- kind of doubt there are- but if anyone’s been missing me around, it’s not personal, I’m just pacing myself!

As one might have sussed looking at some of my recent sketch posts, I am still planning to get back into doing some comics for the site and have plenty of material to work from, just again, time and energy are a thing. The next few days especially I kind of need to make a push to create a set of overlays for a marathon while also practicing some game runs *for* said marathon… hopefully inspiration bonks me upside the head and the overlays turn out to be a snap so I can work on not embarassing myself. But RK is definitely in my brain and I hope that the redone version of the story will be to everyone’s liking. I’ve learned a hell of a lot about both art and writing since back then.

I’ve been kicking around a few sorta opinion pieces I might share here in the future, otherwise til next time feel free to follow my Twitter/Twitch for a steady drip of my content (apparently the Twitch widget on the sidebar doesn’t actually work, I’ll have to look into that.) Take care, everyone.

The holdays are nearly upon us again, like some vast, predatory bird, and I’m not sure if I’m feeling it any more or less than last year. But, I don’t feel *awful,* so that’s something. Not been as productive as I’d have liked the past few months, but Twitch has been kinda eating up most of my time and energy between streaming and working on graphics for friends and clients. I’m thinking maybe sometime next week I’ll do something X-masy.

The Valkyrie mascot below is for a lady RPG speedrunner group a friend’s started, their first event will be running from Friday afternoon through Sunday if you’re interested in supporting ’em. Most of the rest of the sketch dump here are warm up sketches of various success since I’ve not been at it as much as I should be.
